A specialist you can trust

Mr Alistair Jepson was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2005 and has over 20 years experience as a consultant, specialising in the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist, including sports injuries. He works with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, and Bedford and Oundle Rugby Clubs.

Using your health insurance

Each insurer has its own rules, so it is worth a short call to them before you book. A pre-authorisation code confirms that your insurer has agreed to cover your consultation, and helps you avoid unexpected bills later.

Your insurer may call it an authorisation number, a claim number or a pre-authorisation code. They all mean the same thing.

Check if you need a referral

Most insurers ask for a GP referral, and some offer their own digital GP service or let you refer yourself. If you need one, ask your GP for a referral to an upper limb specialist, or a letter naming Mr Jepson.
Call your insurer

Explain your symptoms and say you would like to see Mr Alistair Jepson, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. They may ask for his GMC number, 4104128, and which hospital you would like: Circle Three Shires or Woodland.
Note your code and your cover

Write down the code and ask what it covers: how many outpatient appointments, whether scans are included, and whether your policy has an excess or an outpatient limit you may need to pay.
Book with the practice

Call with your insurer's name, membership number and code. If you later need a scan, injection or operation, your insurer usually authorises that step separately, and the practice team can give you the details they ask for.

A list of the medicines you take and any allergies, if they are not already in your NHS App
Reports from any previous X-rays, scans or injections, especially if they were done at another hospital
Notes from physiotherapy or earlier treatment for the same problem
Loose, comfortable clothing, so your shoulder, elbow, hand or wrist can be examined easily

Your GP referral letter, physiotherapy letters, previous scan results and photos of your problem can all be uploaded securely to your Carebit patient dashboard before your consultation. This is very helpful: Mr Jepson can read everything beforehand, so more of your appointment is spent on you and your plan.

Had an X-ray or scan somewhere else?

Please let the practice team know when you book, including where and roughly when it was done. The team will try to obtain copies of the images and reports for Mr Jepson to look at. This usually takes 1 to 3 days, so the sooner you tell them, the more likely the images will be ready for your appointment.

Paying for yourself

You do not need health insurance to see Mr Jepson. Self-paying patients are seen at Circle Three Shires Hospital in Northampton and Woodland Hospital in Kettering, and you see Mr Jepson himself at your consultation and follow-up appointments.

Mr Jepson's consultation fees are shown below. The cost of any scans, injections or operations depends on the care you need and the hospital you choose, so these are quoted separately. You will always know what something costs before you commit to it.

Your first consultation

Call the practice to arrange an appointment at either hospital, or book online at Three Shires. A new patient consultation is £290, and the team will explain how and when to pay when you book.
Scans and tests

If you need an X-ray, ultrasound or MRI to confirm the diagnosis, it is usually arranged at the same hospital and charged separately. Mr Jepson will explain why a scan is needed before anything is booked.
About scans and imaging
A written quote first

If an injection or operation is recommended, the hospital's self-pay team gives you a written quote. This is usually a package price covering your hospital stay, the surgeon and anaesthetist, and agreed aftercare, so check exactly what it includes.
Time to decide

There is no pressure to go ahead on the day. When you are ready, the procedure is usually paid for before your treatment date, and the hospital can tell you about any payment options it offers.
